Does CBD show psychotropic effects on children / adolescents?
Cannabidiol is one of the most studied phytocannabinoid molecules found in cannabis. After finding out that CBD does offer a number of health benefits, while it is not psychotropic and has no psychoactive, narcotic or toxic effects, almost everyone wants to get it in their hands and improve their health.
The World Health Organization declared in 2018 that CBD is generally well tolerated and no evidence of addiction and its possible abuse has been found so far. On the other hand, there is talk about the possible benefits of using CBD not only for adults, but also for children and adolescents - for example, better memory, higher daily alertness, less agitation and enhanced immune function.
Most CBD-containing products come from hemp, with the most commonly used type of cannabis being low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and high levels of CBD. THC is the substance responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, CBD is different - it is not psychoactive.
By comparison, any plant with more than 0.3% THC is considered marijuana, the use of which is illegal in the vast majority of countries.
THC and CBD molecules are similar in many ways, but the main difference is in the way they interact with the human body:
- THC acts on receptors in the brain (CB1 receptors), thereby activating them, and consequently psychoactive effects on the user
- CBD does not activate these receptors located in the brain, so it does not cause any psychoactive effects. At the same time, however, it supports the activity of cannabinoids, which occur in the human body.
When is it appropriate to give CBD to children and adolescents?
There are many reasons why CBD should reach growing children and adolescents. In addition to improving immunity and overall health, CBD can relieve various pains, reduce the incidence of inflammation, and improve the state of inflammation that persists. CBD can effectively address the problems of insomnia, nervousness, coping with stressful situations, and improve the overall mental state of children and adolescents.
We repeat that CBD is not toxic or psychoactive and does not show any side effects manifested by a change in the user's behavior or thinking.
The main reasons for administering CBD to children and adolescents
1. CBD can reduce the incidence of anxiety
Anxiety is not uncommon in children and not at all in adolescents. They arise as a result of insufficient nutrition, constant pressure in the home or school environment.
CBD can turn very quickly with unpleasant anxiety due to its ability to increase the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, which reduce the hyperactivity of the nervous system.
The mind thus gets the opportunity to relax after a stressful event and the CBD also helps to return to a state of rest more quickly.
2. CBD can alleviate problems with stress or insomnia
Insomnia and the problems associated with it can deplete the body, regardless of age. Too high demands on children and adolescents often cause an inability to rest, relax and gain strength for a new day.
At the same time, long-term exposure to the screens of computers, phones or tablets results in constant tension, which can cause problems with falling asleep or with peaceful and full sleep. Restless sleep and insufficient rest cause the child to be exhausted and therefore, in most cases, irritated.
CBD gives the child's brain calming and relaxation, which allows the child to fall asleep naturally and peacefully, thus gaining new strength.
3. CBD can significantly help children and adolescents with epilepsy or autism
Many studies show that CBD can help with epilepsy. Extracts with a high content worked almost immediately - the severity of seizures decreased as well as their incidence.
Unfortunately, autism occurs in children at a very young age, with few options for alleviating symptoms without side effects. There is no cure for autism, but CBD can significantly help manage symptoms and become a potential treatment.
4. CBD in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a common and increasingly common neurological disorder. The use of commonly used drugs is often associated with side effects, so it is better to look for possible natural alternatives, one of which is CBD.
CBD can effectively alleviate the symptoms of the disorder, which include hyperactivity or insomnia associated with subsequent anxiety. It helps the child to acquire a calm and peaceful state of relaxation.
5. CBD reduces the incidence of inflammatory processes - it solves various skin problems
CBD has the ability to act on the immune system and thus act to prevent inflammation throughout the body. It can help solve various skin problems such as dandruff, psoriasis or eczema.
The vast majority of adolescents deal with acne. CBD can eliminate inflammation, suppress infection and reduce sebum production, thus effectively treating acne. Some research even speaks of its possible use to eliminate and reduce the occurrence of acne scars.
At the end ...
CBD products can be a great way for children and adolescents to improve their health as well as for adults. The most commonly used products include CBD-containing oils, which are easy to use - specific doses can be easily determined by counting drops or by means of a measuring cup.
After consulting a doctor, you will certainly know which dose is ideal for your child, taking into account his age, weight and state of health. At the same time, make sure that your product is 100 % safe and does not contain any psychotropic THC (none of the products available in Slovakia should contain it, as its use is illegal in our country). Monitor the effect of use closely, then gradually adjust the next dose.
