Boswellia serrata is a rare tree from the birch family that grows to a height of 2-8 meters. It is most often found in northern and central India and North Africa. This tree is characterized by the presence of several trunks, leaves with serrated edges, which give it its generic name, and small white flowers. The resin that is used the most from the tree is taken from trees older than 8 years. Resin protects the tree from injury by healing cuts in the bark and killing pathogens present. In order to obtain the resin, growers have to break the bark, which releases the resin, which is collected in special bamboo baskets and further processed into powder or extracts. The resin is characterized by its smell, which is caused by the presence of substances called terpenes.
The aforementioned resin was already used in traditional Indian medicine in the treatment of inflammation, shingles or various cardiovascular diseases.
The extract obtained from the resin of the incense tree has a positive effect on the musculoskeletal system and contributes to maintaining the normal state of the joints. It also contributes to the proper circulation in fine blood vessels and capillaries, thanks to which it has a positive effect on maintaining normal heart activity and blood cholesterol levels.
Boswellia serrata contains several active substances, but the strongest effects have boswellic acids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. The Arthritis Foundation recommends taking 720 mg of boswellic acid daily. These substances have a similar effect to the acetylsalicylic acid present in aspirin, with the difference that boswellic acids do not irritate the digestive tract. Thanks to the aforementioned anti-inflammatory effects, they also contribute to the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
